As children, nothing made Amanda and her sister Robyn more excited than when their mom would allow them to look through her jewelry box in search of beautiful treasures! One by one, the girls would carefully pull each piece out of the box and lay them out on their parent’s bed. Robyn always loved the larger, more dramatic pieces, while Amanda was drawn to anything that sparkled!
In 2007, while walking along the beach at her grandparent’s cottage in the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Amanda picked up a shell with purple splashed across the front of its smooth white surface like paint on a canvass. She took it home, thinking it was too beautiful to leave behind, and she put it in her craft room.
A couple months later, Amanda was trying to think of what she was going to make for Christmas gifts that year and she went to her craft room for inspiration. Lying on her sewing table was the beautiful shell she had thought so lovely a few months ago and the inspiration to turn it into jewelry hit her all at once.
By combining her love for the beach and remembering her mom’s stylish and unique jewelry collection, she created a necklace for her sister that year, and she absolutely loved it! From there, Amanda started to pick up more shells on beaches all across the Maritimes and made more gifts for family and friends which were enthusiastically received.
In 2008 Amanda’s work evolved into wire beaded and crystal rings and more recently she has designed the Papo Bead line of Jewelry. “Amanda Bent Design” officially began in 2008 when she sold her first ring to a co-worker that loved the unique and bold style of her pieces. She now regularly sells at markets all over
In 2009, Robyn joined Amanda and has been trained in the Papo making process, as well as designing Papo pieces and wire wrapped shells. Robyn also designs mini gift boxes for their jewelry, helps create the market displays, handles orders and is just an overall lifesaver!
Amanda and Robyn’s work reflects what they feel are the most important aspects of collecting jewelry: affordability, uniqueness and beauty. These women design jewelry from their hearts and each piece is carefully considered and handmade.
“We hope that, if nothing else, you enjoy looking at our jewelry pieces as much as we enjoyed looking at our mom’s collections all those years ago."
